When I paint, I feel so free! Lately I haven't had the chance to really pick up a paint brush. I have been so busy with preparing for summer camp for the girls, getting ready for my 40th birthday party at PaperSassy, designing my holiday line, creating a Funky Junk class for women in August, and back to school celebrations in August! Whew! I just get tired thinking about all of it!

But today, due to a wonderful customer and new friend name Jackie, I was commissioned to paint a door for her daughter's room, create a metal framed bulletin board for her new home and design hat boxes in memory of Elvis. So, I picked up my paintbrush and painted my idea on canvas first, to show her what was on my mind. She said she loved it! So here it is. This will be the painting I will do for her on a large room door!

Our geT CREATive! Summer Art Camp for Girls got off to a FANTASTIC start!
We had 7 girls ages 9- 12 for our first camp, June 15- 19th! The girls were wonderful. We have a beautiful time creating, sharing and learning new ideas.

We enjoyed making cool memo boards out of kitchen cabinet doors, funky push pins and magnets, painting and decoupaging stationery buckets, creating our own stationery and lining envelopes!

Our next camp is in July!

How Three Little Girls Made My Day!

A few weeks ago three little girls, Claire, Caroline and Anna, walked in my store with their mom, Amy. They fell in love with PaperSassy. They came to get a sports bottle made for their friend Alexie's birthday.

I invited them in my studio to help me design the sports bottle for their friend. They were so excited to see me in action. As I was making the product for them, they explored every inch of the store. They had something to say about everything, even gave me tips on how to market many items! I totally fell in love with these cuties.

The next time I saw them, the little ladies each wanted to get our insulated bright colored lunch bags with their names monogramed on them. Their mommy, Mrs. Hughes, also decided to treat herself by getting an apron with her monogram embroidered on it. They couldn't wait to get these back. When they got them, I just had to take pictures!!!

This weekend, little Claire brought her grandmother, Ms. Sylvia, Ms. Sylvia. What a thrill! She was such a joy to get to know. I was so amazed at how well she was getting around after a long journey of healing from foot and knee surgery. Claire showed her around and introduced PaperSassy to her loving grandmother. She was beaming. Before she left, I gave her one our Chick With Choices pajama shirts. The shirt is way too big for her, but you would have thought I gave her gold. She was so grateful. Within hours, she personally emailed me to let me know how much I meant to her and to thank me. Well if she only knew how much I enjoyed her for just being a new friend to me.

I never knew how much meeting three little girls could make my day. I look forward to seeing them again.

The Chair That Made My Day

Found a chair on the side of the road last Saturday morning (03/07/09). Paid the man $2.00 for the chair. The weather was amazing and I had to work at my store (PaperSassy). So, between helping customers, I decided to paint that chair for some personal healing after a very tough week. This is the result of my wonderful day!

Wow! Our calendar is rolling full-speed ahead! We have so much planned that PaperSassy will be a whirl of activity from Tuesday, October 28 when we announce the “Mr. Frooglie Needs a Halloween Contest” winners to participating in historic downtown Kernersville’s annual trick-or-treat on Friday, October 31.

This will be my first downtown trick-or-treat affair, and I’ve heard that thousands flock to the street in costume looking for goodies. PaperSassy will have treats for the kids; but the adults will get a treat, too. We are handing out $5 PaperSassy Bucks to use at our giant Holiday Affair on Thursday evening, November 6 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Spend $25 and use your PaperSassy $5 Bucks to save! Bring a friend and increase your bucks to $10. The more friends you bring, the more bucks you earn.

PaperSassy Bucks will be available only at trick-or-treating or through our e-mail distribution so let me know if you aren’t on the list! You’ll want to pop in on November 6 for our Holiday Affair because we have special sales planned for that one night. It will be great night for early Christmas shopping.

CALLING ALL KIDS AGES 5-12: Mr. Frooglie Needs a Halloween Costume Contest

Some days . . . . Poor Barrington, my 13-year-old son, smashed his finger in the door this morning. So as PaperSassy was opening its doors on this bright autumn day, I was getting a call to retrieve him from his misery at school. I used the travel time to catch up on phone calls (the phone rings off of the hook these days as more people are hearing about what we have going on at PaperSassy) and to contemplate our action-packed calendar.

Our next biggest project is an exciting one! We’ve created a “Mr. Frooglie Needs a Halloween Costume” contest featuring our “jazzy-looking” frog! The contest starts October 7 (look for details at http://www.papersassy.com/ or visit the store), and I am spending today getting Mr. Frooglie together for his October debut.

Supporting children in the arts is a significant priority for me. I have served on the board of the Winston Salem Youth Arts Institute and have included local school art teachers on our correspondence. I love children’s books and find much of my colorful, whimsical style inspired by books for the young. I have illustrated both I Wish My Dad Knew by Pamela Gayle (PG Press) and The Adventures of Nique, Nick and Nelle: Quest for a Family Pet by Sonya Correll Cook (Bea Correll’s Press).

That is why PaperSassy is sponsoring Mr. Frooglie’s Costume Contest for children age 5 to 12 years old. Not only is Mr. Frooglie fun and entertaining, but the costume contest gives kids a chance to express their creativity and have a wider audience than the people who use the family refrigerator. We hope to get art that reflects Mr. Frooglie’s groovy personality and the personality of each special participating artist. The winner will receive a stationery prize package that features his/her chosen costume for Mr. Frooglie and will be announced October 28.

Now back to the drawing board. Mr. Frooglie and I have a date to spend the entire day together.

This morning I arrived at the store to find yellow caution tape strung down West Mountain Street. Today was the day Kernersville’s main intersection was being repaved as part of the street project. I have to admit that I wasn’t happy to have the area in front my red door and polka-dotted awning blocked.

But do you know what happened? At exactly 10:00 a.m. when we open, someone was standing at the door waiting to get in! Blocked street and all! I was amazed! I get excited about little things like that. And you know what? It happens almost every day. Someone is waiting to come into PaperSassy to see if the buzz around town is true. Plus, we are seeing repeat customers already.

It must be because of the amazing items we’re carrying. Our Clip & Doodle clipboards have been flying out of the store! They’ve been so popular that I’ve created even new designs. His Name is Mr. Frooglie

Mr. Frooglie is what I named him. I just can't stop drawing frogs. Every since a client asked me to draw a frog scene for her child's stationery to match his room, I have been drawing frog like characters.

I have drawn frogs with funky leggings, cool ties, ruffles, and of course crazy polka dots. I find myself drawing most of these characters in my Bible during Bible Study or on Sunday morning during worship service. I am known to doodle just about anywhere (mostly coffee shops in the Triad) and some of my best drawings come out of me when I am in church, isn't that ironic?

Well, Mr. Froogle has gone fishing. I thought I would share him with you. I drew him this week for a client and just added him to my portfolio The official title: Mr. Frooglie Gone Fishing. Maybe I should name him something else, but this is what came to mind first and usually what I think think first is what my designs become.

The doors are open! PaperSassy, the lively little girl I like to say that I found on the side of the road in Durham, North Carolina, has her own space!

Our new home is a vivid, bright, joyous stationery boutique in historic downtown Kernersville. Walls are lime green, yellow, orange and electric blue – colors that bring happiness to everyone who walks in our red door, a door with PaperSassy beckoning everyone to come on in to see the wonderful stationery designs and multitude of products that we have at PaperSassy!

We’ve gotten a ton of attention from our polka-dotted awning over the front door, a bit of a whimsical departure from other storefronts in historic downtown Kernersville. Everyone has been so welcoming. Our grand Kernersville Chamber of Commerce red ribbon cutting was held Tuesday, September 2 at 9:00 with my family and friends – both new and old – present. We celebrated with brunch and good fellowship.

And believe it or not, new designs were arriving even as we were cutting the ribbon! Our new wrapping paper came just in time for everyone to ooh and ahh over the designs and high-quality sheets. In our first “official” week of being opened, we’ve seen everyone go crazy over our Funky Jumbo Clipboards. Plus, the e-mail coupons have been a huge success (Want to be on the distribution list? Speaking of monogramming, check out the cute Stephen Joseph backpacks crawling with ladybugs and frogs and soaring with rockets. They coordinate so nicely with many of our stationery designs. Monogram the front flap for a special gift for special little people in your life!

The Holidays are Here!

Christmas is my favorite time of the year!

I am so excited about the new things we have added to our line and about our first Annual Holiday Sale we are having for the public to come meet me personally and purchase items form our showroom!

Meet the Chickwitches

Hello everybody!

The first week of August has already flown past us, bringing us a teensy bit closer to the glorious fall season and the silly antics of Halloween lovers. It is in the high 90’s here in North Carolina, and I know how hard it is to imagine cooler weather, wearing soft sweaters, the smell of candy apples and thinking of the perfect costume, but let us tempt you…

Last year, my Halloween Chickwitch collection was designed in record time on a whim and a request. I had such fun exploring the non-gory side of this celebration that I wanted to bring Miss Chickwitch back in 2007 for another season in the spotlight!

Chickwitch is featured in five full-color invitations and matching folded notecards that all have fun themes and sayings like, “Let me Bewitch You”, “Under My Spell”, “Charmed, I’m Sure” and others.

National Black Theatre Festival is in Town: Celebrities Everywhere!

We are so excited to welcome the National Black Theatre Festival back to Winston Salem. In memory of its' found Larry Leon Hamlin, who passed just a month ago, the festival still goes on. Celebrities have arrived and Truliant Federal Credit Union hosted the Celebrity Reception this evening. I was asked to speak at this all-star event on behalf of my favorite non-profit organization in the city, the Winston Salem Youth Arts Institute. Truliant is a sponsor of this program this summer.

I was honored to meet a famous portrait artist at this function by the name of Leo Rucker, who unveiled his painting of Larry Leon Hamilin. Everyone's breath was taken away by the beauty this portrait conveyed. It was presented to Larry's wife, Sylvia Sprinkle Hamlin. This man's hands are truly gifted. I was encouraged to keep on doing what I do and was promised by Leo that one day soon our paths will cross again. I am so looking forward to that day.

I was excited of course to meet the hospital chief of Grey's Anatomy, James Pickens, at this event. He was such a nice guy and definitely nice on the eyes in person.

Veteran Actor Hall Williams was kind enough to allow me to take a picture with him. He was known for playing on Sanford and Son, and most recently in the movie Guess Who , with Ashton Kutcher and Zoe Saldana.

I found Ella Joyce from Roc, The Jamie Foxx Show, and My Wife and Kids. Ella was my uncle Jerome Transou's favorite person of all time. Jerome Transou died last summer. I mentioned to her that I was his neice, she just hugged me and couldn't help but to shed a few tears because she dearly misses him too.

I was about to leave and couldn't help but to get two more pictures of some wonderful actors.

One was of Obba Babatundé ( left). I recognized him from one of my favorite soap operas, One Life to Live, as well as Cold Case and sitcom Half and Half. You have to admit, this man is just beautiful.

And last but not least I met two wonderful women (below left), Karen Malina White, from Different World, The Crosby Show, Proud Family, Boston Public and the Shield.

The other gorgeous lady with me is Wendy Raquel Robinson. You might recognize her from The Game, Girlfriends, Something New, Rebound, and Two Can Play That Game. I am looking forward to meeting these ladies again. I invited them to my studio before they leave town. Maybe they will come. Fingers crossed.

What a wonderful way to end my evening and begin my week. I am so looking forward to the plays that each of these wonderful actors will be in this week. I will take my son with me to these events and let him experience our rich heritage and explore other ways of artistic expression.

There are days when we just want to stand up and scream, "Thank you Jesus, for all you have done for me!" This is that day and I must admit that everyday, I am so grateful to have a career that I truly enjoy and can never get enough of.

We recently rolled out two new products, our PlaceMatties and our 2007 Holiday Photo Card Collection. Our PlaceMatties have become a big hit. They are our version of personalized placemats for kids. We wanted to share our designs with children all over the country with their names on it. While designing these, I thought of bright colors that make kids feel great and happy. I thought about things that kids like such as cars, dragonflies, the circus, and the ballet. I thought of little girls thinking of themselves as a pretty princess and boys imagining themselves taking off in a rocket ship far far away. I really like to get into the role of the person I envision my product will end up with.

Our 2007 Holiday Photo Card Collection is a first for us and has been in huge demand from our fans for for over 3 years. I am pleased to announce that these are officially ready for press. I designed this collection with the idea of printing the photo my customers want to use right on the card. I believe these make a more professional look and since we print every card as we receive orders we are in the posistion to handle just this type of product. We pride ourselves in being the best in color usage and saturation on every card we print.

We are currently working on two new concepts in the stationery and gift industry for two new clients. One client, Glory Locs, we are designing an all Afrocentric line for women, children and men who celebrate being natural. These are people who wear dreads, love nappy hair and are proud of it. They love themselves and their personal beauty and want to share it with the world. I can't wait until all of my designs are complete and you can see what I am talking about and learn more about just how beautiful this movement really is.

The other client we are working on is a stationery and gift line that celebrate Love, Joy and Abundance. This is more of an inspiration line that uses words of wisdom to elevate you to a greater way of living and enjoying your life. I am personally being edified while I am designing this project.

Reading novels (good juicy ones)
Watching All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital.
Going to Starbucks in the mornings and getting my Cinnamon Dolce Latte
Eating my favorite Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese on a Square Bagel at Breugger Bagels.
Trying new makeup form Bobbi Brown cosmetics.
Finishing a list of things to do for the day.
Getting orders on my products
Shipping products all over the country.
Talking to my husband about our dreams and our future.
Watching my son when he is not looking and admiring how he is growing.
Talking with my parents on the phone, just because.
Talking to my sisters about everything and anything.
Going to the book store in the middle of the day for inspiration
Raising money for a good cause and meeting our goal.
talking about my childhood with my cousins
spending time with my family in church.

You should have a "What Make Me Happy List" and revisit it often to remind you what really matters in your life.

The Best Weekend Ever...BABIES BABIES BABIES!

Okay, I know it's been a while since I last posted but hey, I've been busy. I recently just launched my favorite line ever entitled, PlaceMatties (you have got to see these) on our website. It has become a huge hit. We even used them for my nieces' 1st birthday party. Each child invited to Karsyn's birthday got a personalized PlaceMattie of their own. She had a princess theme party and of course I did her pink and yellow princess invitations. My mom made her a fabulous princess cake and even a little cake of her very own with a star in top! She also made little shortbread cookies 1 with a star and the then another with the number 1 place in the cutest clear bag and tied with bright yellow ribbon. The babies there were so beautiful and full of fun and excitement. I got so carried away with taking pictures and trying to catch every moment I could of this perfect event.

Not long after leaving my niece's party, my husband, son and I had to get on the road and get back to Winston Salem for my granddaughter's 1st birthday (yes, these girls are 6 days apart)! Shayla had many friends at her party and of course, I did her party invitations too. The kids were outside and had a lot of space to play. Shayla smashed a cupcake in her face and simply devoured it. It was so funny.

Have Yourself a Creative Day Contest!

What I do when I want to have a creative day and I don't want to draw anymore, is PAINT! I paint what is on my desk, old furniture, those gorgeous shoes that I just gotta have, a place I want to visit with my son, my favorite magazine cover... just about anything.

What about you? Have you ever just wanted to pick up a can of paint and a blank canvas and wondered what your finished piece would look like? Are you a doodler and find yourself having fun just doodling? Do you like crayons, like I do, and color everything you can get your hands on - even your kids coloring books? Do you use multiple colored markers in your Daytimers or journals to express just what your are thinking in color? Will you allow us to peak inside your personal creative expressions? Then this is the contest for you! We just want to see what other people do during their day to express themselves creatively.

Paint Day With the Winston-Salem Youth Arts Institute!

I had a wonderful day teaching 12 kids of the Winston Salem Youth Arts Institute my whimsical painting techniques. They toured my studio and were challenged with the task of painting on cabinet doors a scene that answers this question: When I open my door what do I see? The kids were painting these doors for a citywide silent auction coming in the month of July. Their doors will be placed in many local businesses and banks throughout our community including all of the Starbucks coffee shops, Truliant credit unions, Bruegger Bagels, and so many more! This is a fundraiser for the 5 year old WSYAI non-profit program. I am so excited to be a part of this Project Doors fundraiser and a member of this board. These kids are absolutely incredible.

Kids are Amazing!

Last night, I had the pleasure of witnessing again the wonderful artistic dramatization by the youth of the Winston Salem Youth Arts Institute. These kids write, sing, rap, act, paint, draw and so much more. They, who by many were counted out, have rose to the occasion to share their life experiences and teach us something about their generation. They have taken this opportunity to express themselves to a level most of us adults couldn't conceive. The kids sang and spoke about diversity, racism, and the language the choose to share with each other. The audience was captivated. So many people came out to support them, many of whom I knew.

As a board member of this program, I never felt so proud being a part of something so amazing.

On this Saturday, many of these kids will join me at my studio for Paint Day, to paint cabinet doors with their artistic expressions to be auctioned off in businesses throughout our city. I am so honored to share with them my skill and more excited about what they will paint.

PaperSassy is Finally Live!

Devora Designs has finally launch www.PaperSassy.com, a stationery and gift store featuring all of our products. Nowhere in the nation, in all of the stores that carry our line, can a customer find everything we have designed. Over the last 4 years, many people asked us where could they see a full collection of our products? This is what inspired us to consider an online presence. We toyed with the idea for the last year, not really sure how this could work for us. We did a lot of research and finally made it happen! We wanted to make sure we could manage a website and continue to sell our products to other retailers nationwide. We talked with our customers and the vibe we got was very positive! Most did not feel threatened by the idea of us selling our own product directly.

PaperSassy launched successfully on June 15th, 2007. We are so excited about all of you who have encouraged us and helped us spread the word about our new venture. We look forward to making our site more about you, the paper lovers and the sassy people who throw the best parties and give the best gifts to everyone they know! The PaperSassy Diary is designed to share with you everything that inspires me, the artist of the Devora Designs. I love beautiful things, cotton candy, children, being a mom, shoes (I guess I could stop right here), pretty flowers, bright colors, crayons, my mom’s home baked cookies, and of course my favorite chewing gum: Extra Watermelon!
